Annunciation to the Shepherds
In this miniature from a French Book of Hours (c.1425-50), the shepherd’s dog is tied to his girdle just as described in the 16th century English carol ‘Jolly Wat the Shepherd’ The Shepherd upon a hill was layd Hys doge to hys gyrdyll was tayd He had not slept but a lytill broyd But ‘Gloria in Excelsis’ was to him sayd! The shepherd also has some of the gear traditionally associated with shepherds: his pouch and crook, and some sort of mittens. To the right, the shepherdess is busily engaged with making a garland. Intent on her work, she ignores the angel.
